Before we get deep into things, I want to make sure I explain what email marketing is and how it works. The reason email marketing is so powerful is because unlike social media or even search engine optimization, it’s a way to build long term relationships, and to contact everyone whose expressed interest in your mission by sending an email.

Smartphones are growing in popularity, and most people have an app on their phone for email. These apps will notify them when a new email hits their inbox. As a result, when you have a large email list, you can send a message and instantly have notifications going off to people all over the world!

In contrast, if you don’t have an email list, you’d have to try manual methods like cold email, social media marketing, messenger marketing, or posting on your blog to cold traffic–all these methods have lower conversion rates.

I want to illustrate everything with a scenario.

So the scenario goes…

You are buying lighting for your Youtube channel. You start looking online for lighting reviews and you see some that look probable, but you want to make the purchase after you’ve thoroughly done your research.

You go from review to review reading about different lighting sets, watching the Youtube videos, and you start to make a wishlist, then you come across a website that has a free email course that teaches you all about Youtube lighting.

This email course answers every question you had about lighting and recommends good options for different budget tiers. How likely would you be to use the affiliate links in the course considering how helpful the affiliate was in helping you make your buying decision?

Stats show that:

Which tells us that more than half of people who face a situation (like what we mentioned above) would appreciate a scenario where they buy from someone who has delivered more tailored support by way of email marketing.

Cold Traffic vs. Warm Traffic

If you land on a website or Youtube channel you’re seeing for the first time, the odds are you’re going to be a bit skeptical. You don’t know if they give good advice or not. Their situation may be different than yours and they’re recommendations may be subjective. You have to take your time, get to know them, and listen a little bit.

Cold traffic are the people who are just meeting you. They may or may not have an intention to buy. They could be in any stage of the buyer’s journey.

Do all Affiliate Sites need Email Marketing?

Some sites do very well without email marketing. Sites with lower cost and lower risk offers tend to do okay without email marketing. I’ve personally seen many Amazon niche sites do very well without capturing email addresses because of the reputation of Amazon and the relevance of the recommendation.

On the other hand, sites with products or services that are less familiar to the market, with affiliate partners that don’t have as large of a reputation, or with products or services that are $35 or more (I made this up), may require more context, authority, or trust to be built up via email.

My Personal Opinion about Email

I think the person who has the business is the person who owns the customer relationship. A dangerous thing about affiliate marketing is that you’re the middle man, which means you can easily be squished in the middle if one of the other parties makes a change. For example, let’s say your affiliate partner stops delivering quality services.

If you don’t have an email list, it’ll be harder to protect your customers, and make sure they’re still going to be well taken care of if you can’t contact them. Added to that, if you make a product or service that could be helpful for them, it would be more difficult to let them know without an email list.

Which sites need email marketing vs. Which ones Don’t?

To summarize, sites that need email marketing are sites who:

  • Want ownership of their customer relationships
  • Are likely to have customers that need more context, authority, and trust established before a purchase
  • And, who may have future offers that are going to be relevant to your audience

With that said, there are many email marketing solutions that people use to build their businesses, but these are the highest recommended options for affiliate marketers.

1. Getresponse [My #1 Recommendation]

Getresponse has been making some drastic changes over the last year or so. They offer email marketing, but they’re more like an all-in-one solution. The email marketing function is what Getresponse is most known for, but nowadays, they can also do webinars, make landing pages, and create full sales funnels!

I think they’re leading in the innovation category, and I’m not sure how much more they’ll be adding. I personally decided to stick with Convertkit because I like the features and benefits I get, but I’ve also seen great things from those who use Getresponse. 2. Convertkit

Convertkit was created by Nathan Berry, who is an online entrepreneur himself. He blogged for years and became very successful as a blogger, but he felt the email marketing software space had major gaps. In order to have segmentation and advanced tagging options, you’d have to pay for complex software or very expensive options–neither is ideal for small business owners like affiliate marketers.

With Convertkit, you can send out an email newsletter, segment your audience based on their activity, and follow up in a more customized way than what’s possible with the other options I’ll be listing. The Aweber is much less complex and more simple and streamlined than Getresponse or Convertkit (although those are both fairly easy to navigate). It satisfies the basic necessities affiliate marketers need: it collects email address, integrates with most software, and has high email deliverability.

Lastly, Podia is a platform you can use to sell digital products of all sorts: from digital downloads to online courses. They have email marketing built into their software, so you can email all of your customers, segment them by product purchased, and analyze data like click rates, open rates, and more.

It doesn’t have high-level segmentation features (like you’d get with Convertkit), but they’re making major improvements to the email marketing features within the platform.
