If you’re considering getting started in affiliate marketing, or you’re adding a new site into your portfolio, it’s likely, you’ve been told you need to “choose a niche”. Here, we’ll be discussing the best website niche ideas, so you can get past this step and onto building your business.

Within affiliate marketing, it’s very important to choose a niche or “audience” as one of the first steps before anything else. Choosing a niche helps you to be clear about who you’re helping, and to make content or ads that are very relevant to them. Relevance is a huge key to success in marketing and advertising.

Good Niches vs. Bad Niches: What’s the Difference?

Many entrepreneurs get stuck at picking a niche because they don’t want to mess up. You can probably relate.

You might be worried about picking something you’ll get bored with, you can’t make good money with, or that might be “too saturated”–these are the common concerns I hear from new affiliates I coach. Even affiliates who have been around for awhile may get stuck choosing a niche for a new site in their portfolio because of various reasons. I get it.

You don’t want to waste time, money, or be disappointed, but there’s some element of risk in every business. The good thing about affiliate marketing is that the risk level is fairly low. You don’t have to spend thousands upfront to build a website, and you can get sales with very little overhead, so it’s not like other businesses where a mistake costs you tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars!

This list of niches and the correlating steps to choose a niche will help you to discover if your niche is profitable, enjoyable, and worth committing to. Once you’re done performing the steps listed here, you should be confident enough to move past this step and closer to building your business.

Questions to Ask When Picking a Niche

When you’re going to pick a niche, it’s important to answer these questions:

  • Are there products available to promote?
  • Do people buy products in this industry?
  • Are people on Google looking for products in this industry?
  • Do you have good commission opportunities for well priced items in the niche?
  • Are there sites in the niche making money?

If you can answer, “Yes” to any of those questions, then it’s likely you can make money in the niche. I like how the guys at Authority Hacker split niches into three categories: passion, problems, and lifestyle. I’ve decided to take that method of categorizing niches and grow a list of affiliate marketing niche ideas for you that you’ll see in a bit, but let’s first discuss a few things that cause affiliates to get stuck in the niche selection process…

Narrow vs. Broad Niches: Do Narrow or Broad Niches Make the Best Website Niche Ideas?

It’s okay if you decide you want to be in a broad niche. I’ve seen many affiliates get hung up on this because the mainstream teaching says, “choose a narrow audience and build out”. It’s best to choose a narrow audience to start with, then branch out once you’ve established success in one niche first. Over time, these narrow niches can become categories or sub-niches on your site, but in the beginning, it’s where you’re starting out.

For example, Amazon.com started out as a bookstore, then once they mastered that, they began testing to see whether they’d get sales in other categories. Today, they’re one of the largest e-commerce stores online!

You can do the same thing! Start with a narrow audience (niche), then once you get a foothold in the market with one audience, you can test out other things that may have relevance to that audience.

Affiliate Sites vs. Authority Sites: Do Affiliate Sites or Authority Sites Make the Best Website Niche Ideas?

Another thing you may see as you’re choosing a niche is the concept of affiliate sites or “niche sites” and authority sites. Instructors like Income School focus on building niche sites while other instructors like Authority Hacker focus on authority sites, and you may be wondering “What’s best?”.

While I wouldn’t say there’s a best or worse, I would say they’re different, and let me explain…

Affiliate sites typically master content on an audience’s passion or problem, while authority sites tend to address several niches and turn more into lifestyle brands. For example, there are niche sites on solar energy or specific animal types (like bulldog care tips), but authority sites may have information on solar energy, green living, and other things. In other words, authority sites tend to have several sub-niches built onto one site, but oftentimes, they start as a niche site.

Affiliate sites are typically built on high demand and low competition subjects, so they can be used to grow passive income. Authority sites usually require much more content, grow communities around the content, and have more backend work like responding to comments, growing an email list, and may even have digital products or services that go along with everything else.

Whether you want to start an affiliate site or an authority site, it’s best to target a narrow audience first with the content. You can choose a broad domain name that enables you to grow, but the content you write should speak to a specific audience and specific problems.

What’s Next After Choosing a Niche?

After you’ve chosen a concept you’re interested in, it’s important to begin site planning with market research to verify the demand and supply in your niche. Niches that tend to have the quickest results online have low supply and high demand for the products, services, and content on the site. When you can find an opportunity where the economics works out, jump on it.

Tools to Use to Validate a Niche

Jaaxy

Personally, I like to use Jaaxy to research keywords to see how often people are searching for keywords I may want to use on my website. Jaaxy tells you how often people are searching for the keywords, how many people are competing, and you can glimpse at the actual search rankings from inside the Jaaxy Interface. It will tell you how many words are on top-ranking pages, how many backlinks, and the Alexa score. It will also help you to brainstorm keyword ideas.

I like to create lists with keyword ideas. Jaaxy will give you a projection, so you’ll know that if you write content around the keywords on a list, then you can have an approximate projection about how much traffic you could have. I’ll be honest, that feature still has alot of room for error, but it’s still better to have a seasoned approximation rather than having nothing.

Jaaxy is a great tool for validating niches and content ideas.

Spyfu

I also like to use Spyfu. With Spyfu, you can enter the domain of a competitor and see the keywords they rank for and the search volume it brings them. The numbers are skewed and a little inaccurate, but it still helps me to come up with good content ideas based on what’s working for others.

Pinterest

I go on Pinterest to see what content is helpful in various niches. It also helps me to see the demand for a topic or niche. Pinterest is just one step I take to validate a niche idea, but it’s one I’ve done repeatedly because it’s a tool that can be used to drive hundreds of thousands of visitors to your website if you know how to use it like Create and Go teaches. I look to see how many shares a pin gets, how many comments are on the posts, and other information that proves the demand. I use my research from Pinterest to add to my decision about whether the niche is a go or no go.

Youtube

In addition to Jaaxy (which includes Google, Bing, and Yahoo results), Spyfu, and Pinterest, I also like to scroll around on Youtube to see if content in my niche is getting views. I’ll look at when the content was published, how many views it’s gotten, how many comments it’s gotten, and decide on content or if the niche is valid altogether.

Reverse Engineering Competitor Funnels

Once I’ve done research and found some good competitor sites and content ideas, I like to reverse engineer competitor funnels to find:

  • Affiliate programs I may want to apply to
  • Affiliate offers to promote
  • Content ideas
  • Demand and Supply
  • Or, Potential collaborations
