When you think of leadership, it can mean a variety of things.  To some people, leadership may mean:

  • Authoritarian
  • Evil
  • Lazy
  • A person who tells others what to do
  • and, it can even be a brutal term to describe someone who misused their position

There are many negative connotations towards leaders because some people don’t know how to properly exercise the power a position may allow them.  Instead, they use their power to abuse, hurt, or direct people in a harmful way.  Leaders like Adolf Hitler, Vladmir Lennon, Joseph Stalin, and Mao Zedong have brutal images imprinted in millions of people’s minds about leadership.

Alternatively, there’s a minority of leaders who are disciplined, empathetic, assertive, but see their role as a service to those they lead.  When you think of these leaders, some signs of a leader may be:

  • An example
  • Servant heart
  • They draw out the potential of their followers
  • They’re Influencers

Leadership is a personal and professional endeavor.  You have to lead yourself well enough to accomplish notable things, then you attract others who allow you to influence them like your family, friends, and a growing audience.  When leadership is done well, it stabilizes, brings vision and direction, and positively impacts everyone who follows, but it’s a learned behavior–that’s why it’s nice to have people like Michael Hyatt.

  1. Thank-you, Tiffany, for introducing me to this book and to Michael Hyatt!

From some of the quotes you supplied I definitely think it is a book I would enjoy and get value from. In particular, I’ve really been learning in the last few years that we create the experiences we have each day. We are not passive beings, but creators with everything that we say and do.

I’m so glad you provided a background for this man and his biography. I’m definitely going to place it on my list of must reads. Maybe even hint at it for a Christmas gift.

    Wonderful stuff!Stella 🙂

    1. Hi Stella! I’ve been following Michael Hyatt for years now. He speaks on some very relevant topics related to peak performance and maximum potential, and I’ve always found the challenges he does to be a positive influence for me. If you haven’t read any of his books, I’d recommend checking them out. My personal favorite is “Living Forward”. Thanks for stopping by.

  2. Looks like an extremely interesting man, and I really like the first question your article poses – what we think is behind, or the make up, of a leader?

Personally, I think that a leader needs to appear honest at all times. All too often in my life I’ve come across bosses/leaders that don’t give off that honest vibe…and it counts, big time.

I also think that a good leader needs to be seen at succeeding with a large majority of decision-making options/capabilities, leading through successful example.

Back to Hyatt and specifically his courses – are they targeting entrepreneurs or fellow leaders? (or both?)

    1. Hi Chris!

I can’t agree more about how leaders should be honest. Integrity is one of the most important traits in my opinion. It’s unfortunate, but I’ve also come across leaders who don’t exercise integrity, which is why I mentioned that good leaders are a minority.  Michael Hyatt’s courses target both entrepreneus and fellow leaders. Thanks for sharing your experience!

  3. I found this article on leadership great I have never heard of Mr. Hyatt but he sounds like an awesome guy! Being a leader comes with a great deal of responsibility. There were 3 particular quotes that I found to be of great value to me and those were:

“You can’t fail if you don’t quit. You can’t succeed if you don’t start.”

“People lose their way when they lose their why.”

“Perfectionism is the mother of procrastination.”

I used to be an educator at a beauty trade school , and found that my leadership skill were better served out of a controlled environment. I found it hard to follow guidelines that weren’t best for my students, and felt that because I couldn’t follow how can I then lead. Was I wrong for feeling this way?

As I entered back in to the shop I have been asked to step into a few manger position for some establishments just to find out that they had no interest in growing. Was I wrong in leaving for to find more stable ground? I love to learn, and most of all meeting new people. As a leader it is important to know your following and how they can best achieve goals.

Now that I found out who Michael hyatt is I will definitely have to start taking in his words to foster my need to be a prosperous, and effective leader.

    Thanks for posting,

    1. Hi Shannon! Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing your experience. It sounds like you were experiencing conflicts with values and ethics at the beauty school and as a manager, and its not wrong at all to stand by your values. Sometimes, you’ll be able to persuade them to grow or change policies, but not all the time. Everyone has their own will. In fact, I’d say a person who doesn’t stand by their values isn’t a true leader. Leaders can’t be chameleons. Sometimes, they have to stand for what they believe is right, and you did that. You should definitely check out Michael Hyatt. The playlist, books, and links on this post should give you a good start.
