I began blogging as a hobbyist in 2015 because I didn’t know how to blog as a business until this year. I was writing pretty aggressively in 2015 as a nonprofitable side hustle while I was in the military. I was in no way focused. I was Active Duty in the Air Force, doing MANY side hustles (ATMs, gold, fish farming, you name it) that I talked about here, going to school, raising a 7 year old boy, learning to be a wife (I got married in 2011), and planning a career change into entrepreneurship after my military enlistment was over. I was BUSY.
Now, looking back, reading my blog posts from 2015, I was pumping out a lot of content for the circumstances. Added onto the articles I wrote here on the blog, I also wrote and self-published 15 books in 2 years (mostly with my own two hands–no ghostwriter) with good reviews! All along, I loved writing and I really enjoyed blogging.
Around Thanksgiving, I was reflecting and thinking about side hustles I enjoyed. I decided I needed to focus on one and make it work. Blogging was that one. Since, I’ve taken several courses thru Udemy, Making Money Blogging for Beginners, ongoing classes and challenges thru the Billionaire Blog Club lifetime membership, and now, I am taking ongoing classes thru Wealthy Affiliate as well.
I believe strongly in Professional Development and you should too!
I don’t simply want to be a mediocre blogger. I want to be one of the best, a blogger who excites her readers, someone that makes a lasting impact, and someone who has exciting paychecks to show for it. I want to see businesses more profitable, relationships more enjoyable, and individuals with their max esteem as a result of my blog and business journey, but I have to get past the step I’m in: generating sufficient traffic.
Even with all of the things Im proud that I’ve accomplished, I haven’t earned the main portion of my income as I want. I want to blog, write books, and consult, and I want the majority of my income to come from affiliate marketing and product sales. Now, the majority of my income comes from freelancing at home. Freelancing is great, but I want my primary income to come from the blog separate from freelancing.
I’ve tried several ways to get the blog profitable as a standalone entity, but without my earned freelancing manpower, it’s not yet paying my bills. When doing my January goals, I decided that I wanted to make $100 or more thru affiliate marketing, and now with 2 days until the month is over, I am reflecting on how I can amass the remaining $90 more (since I made $10) thru affiliate marketing. Some franchises even require franchisees to choose real estate with a certain amount of traffic passing by. Similarly, online retailers who are trying to sell something also need traffic in order to generate sales. They choose their URL, their content topics, and so on to get relevant visitors to their websites. Let’s continue with the offline and online comparison, shall we?
If I compare, I would say:
- Blog theme and fonts compares to aesthetics of real estate or “curb appeal”
- Logo and branding are almost identical online and offline, but for offline marketing, there’s signage, paper quality, and other factors that online businesses don’t have to consider
- Blog lead magnets are like conveniences (maybe the dollar menu, happy hour, or so on)– they’re those niceties in the store that attract people to the store, and if the offer is good, it may cause people to return
- Depending on your monetization strategy, your blog articles can serve as a lead magnet to product or services, or as the product/service itself (if your focus is on affiliate marketing).
- PPC advertising is the paid flyers, the quality business card, the nice looking press kit, or premium signs and flags that cause people to stop by
The Problem With Businesses (Like Mine) Who Choose To Go Online
For offline businesses, it’s almost common sense that when you go into business, you have to have a marketing budget, and especially if you’re an offline business, you know you’ll have to pay for things like business cards, flyers, ads in the paper, salespeople, or signage that will increase the traffic to your store.
However, with two days left until January is over, and only $10 earned towards my affiliate marketing goal, I decided that I need more training from leaders in the affiliate marketing space, so I signed up for Wealthy Affiliate. Since I’ve been taking classes by Wealthy Affiliate, I’ve gotten great ideas and noticed reasons that many businesses who go online are not reaching the profit potential they should.
Unfortunately, what I’m learning from Wealthy Affiliate is with business owners that are online, we are staying too comfortable after setting up our websites, doing some SEO efforts, and marketing organically on social media. Even within the blog and content creator’s arena, we are doing all this content creation, but not utilizing all the tools (like a paid search engine marketing strategy) to get people to see it.
Many business owners (me included) stay stuck at getting a location (URL), making it aesthetically pleasing (with themes, fonts, etc.), and creating good products and services (whether articles or else), but we forget the part where we may have to pay to increase the traffic to our locations (especially if we’re impatient startups).

SEO is great. Within a few short months, you can generate over 50,000 pageviews or more. Paul Scrivs at Billionaire Blog Club has started dozens of websites and gets them to tens of thousands of viewers within less than 3 months. He knows what he’s doing!
You definitely want to implement great SEO strategies to increase the traffic to your site. Not to knock SEO, but SEO is hard work and time consuming! I’m committed to it because content creation is my business, but for other businesses who want to generate traffic without such an emphasis on content creation and SEO, a paid search engine marketing strategy is a quicker route to traffic. The down-side to SEO is it’s like word of mouth. While the search engines are a GREAT tool for free traffic, it’s kind of like getting a handout when you build your whole business around free traffic.
SEO in Comparison to Offline Marketing Methods
Can you imagine a business offline who relied solely on free options to get customers. SEO is using GIVEN referrals from search engines. What would it be like if offline businesses decided not to put signs for sales? What is they never did flyers? Or, what if they never attended networking gatherings? Having a marketing budget to pay for marketing is the lifeblood of online or offline businesses. You have to pay to play.
How do you look at the freebie (frugal) entrepreneur who tries to do everything for free? Do you admire them or do you think they are unprofessional? Most people think the latter. When you look at their marketing materials, you’re not inspired or awed enough to share them. I can see the torn piece of notebook paper with their name, number, and service in my head.
I know what I do with it, but maybe you’re nicer than me. If their lucky, you may stuff it in your purse, but most likely, their not-so-catchy marketing materials will wind up in the trash. While SEO can do miracles in comparison to a freebies offline, the online world is changing rapidly. Websites are popping up everyday, and if you’re starting out, it is almost mission essential to practice persistence, create great products and services, and pay for a search engine marketing strategy if you want to get in the profit game from your website in under a year. SEO is a longer road than a paid search engine marketing strategy is to money.
A Paid Search Engine Marketing Strategy in Comparison to Offline Marketing Methods
If you are have the “curb appeal” taken care of, you have lead magnets and offers, you have products and services, the next step is to plan a paid search engine marketing strategy to drive traffic and conversions. SEO and the traffic that results will create a proof of concept for your business concept, however, it will take time. You will quickly drive traffic to your site, and see how your experiment (whether a product or service) converts into buying customers. After you have proof of concept, you can scale.

When you add them all together, then I’m starting to think you’re onto something that can give quick ROIs for the right product or service with the relevant keyword match. I’ve seen this work great for my clients (even the ones who are not bloggers or online content creators).
