Who is Tony Robbins and Why Read Tony Robbins Motivational Quotes?

Tony Robbins is an American author, motivational speaker, and personal development life coach.  He is best known for the self-improvement seminars he does all around the world, before 50 million+ people, but most people don’t know the backstory that led to his billion dollar business empire.

Tony didn’t come from riches. In fact, he was born February 29, 1960 to in Los Angeles to John and Nikki Maharovick, a small-time actor and parking lot manager, and the daughter of a Disney anime.

At 7, his parents divorced.  Tony was told to decide where he wanted to live, and his silence was mistaken as him choosing his dad.  As a result, his mom left him with his dad while she took his brother and sister. This left Tony grieving the separation of being without his mom and siblings for a couple years until she returned for him.

tony robbins motivational quotesWhen she returned for him, she was 9 years old, and she was remarried. Her second marriage lasted only two short years.

She married a third time. This time, she married Jim Robbins, a former minor league baseball player and salesman.  They struggled financially and even struggled to gather food for the family.  The support his family received from the community at this time inspired his philanthropic efforts later in life.  Aside from financial struggles, Jim Robbins was very influential to Tony, and made them feel they had a real family.

Like Jim, Tony tried to follow his path into pro baseball, but in high school, he realized pro baseball wasn’t for him. He found some success as a sports journalist, but his mom pulled him out.  His mom feared losing control of Tony, so on several occassions when he found opportunities for personal advancement, she would cut him off from opportunities, and add responsibilities at home.  As a teenager, he was responsible for grocery shopping, cooking, cleaning, and early being in charge of the home.

On Christmas Eve, at 17, Tony started to speak up to his mom. He saw the pattern of her terminating opportunities for him to explore his individuality.  He decided to move out of his mom’s house, and he left with nothing but the clothes on his back and determination.

He moved in with a friend where he began paying $50/week in rent, and he got a job with his uncle as a commercial janitor.  His work paid for his food, shelter, and whatever else he needed, but it wasn’t frivolous by any means.  His mom found out about his employment with his uncle and requested he fire Robbins.  In suit with his mom’s request, his uncle fired him, and Tony was forced to find another means to support himself.

He saw an ad in the newspaper for a sales position.  He decided to pursue sales. In a short time, he was supporting himself thru his sales earnings.  A customer he had spotted his talent and suggested he go talk to a local seminar leader named “Jim Rohn”.

Tony followed suit, and requested employment with Rohn.  They developed a mentor/mentee relationship that changed the trajectory of Tony’s life. Now, after years in the self-development industry, Tony’s been able to accomplish many notable things like:

  • Becoming the chairman of a holding company that’s comprised of 40 privately held companies with combined sales exceeding $5 billion per year
  • He’s the author of 6 internationally bestselling books
  • 4 million people have attended his seminars
  • He’s been given several notable nicknames in the press such as “Top 50 Business Intellectuals in the World”, “Top 200 Business Gurus”, Top Six Business Leaders in the world”, or “CEO Whisperer”.
  • He coaches and advises celebrity, athletes, and billionaires including Aerosmith, Greenday, Usher, Pitbull, Serena Williams, Andre Agassi, Golden State Warriors, casino magnate Steve Wynn, and Salesforce founder Marc Beioff
  • He’s provided more than 325 million meals in the last 3 years to those in need, and he’s on track to provide a billion meals over the next 7 years

  1. Thank you for this great article on Tony Robbins motivational quotes. I really like Tony Robbins and have been to several of his seminars – he even convinced me to walk on fire!! I would not have pushed those boundaries without him.
My favourite quotes in this group are “Your past does not equal your future.” and “Most people have no idea of the giant capacity we can immediately command when we focus all of our resources on mastering a single area of our lives.”
What is your favourite quote Tiffany?
Thanks for sharing. Tony Robbins is a very inspiring entrepreneur indeed!

    1. Hi Glenys! You walked on the fire?!!! Very cool! He definitely pushes boundaries, but you need a challenge like that to get out of your comfort zone and get into new territories (even high potential within yourself).

As far as my favorite quote….that’s a hard one. Haha. Even as I was writing this, I was having trouble ending the post because I kept saying to myself, “Man, that’s another good one”.  Your comment has some top contenders, and here are a couple more quotes I really liked…

“Create a vision and never let the environment, other people’s beliefs, or the limits of what has been done in the past shape your decisions.”

“Remember: we all get what we tolerate. So stop tolerating excuses within yourself, limiting beliefs of the past, or half-assed or fearful states. Use your body as a tool to snap yourself into a place of sheer will, determination, and commitment. Face your challenges head on with the core belief that problems are just speed bumps on the road to your dreams. And from that place, when you take massive action—with an effective and proven strategy—you will rewrite your history.”

  2. Obviously I don’t know him personally but he is one of the most inspirational people I have every come across.  Just reading his books and quotes really help keep me motivated.

Its a great touch that you actually go into his background story as well within your article.

I love so many of his quotes but my all time favourite has to be “Success is doing what you want to do, when you want, where you want, with whom you want, as much as you want.”

Its my favourite because this is exactly why I am putting in those long hours everyday.

The guy is a true inspiration, and thankyou for putting together an article about him and listing so many of his quotes.

    1. David,

I think that quote is extremely motivating because who doesn’t want that level of control of their time? It’s great that you’re exercising your work ethic to achieve success. It will pay off.

  3. I have read a lot about Tony Robbins but actually never really knew where he came from but reading it also makes sense to me that he has become the person he is now.

Tony’s quotes had helped me in the past to reflect on my, back then, situation and in a sense shed me the way.

If I had to choose which is my favorite quote from him I have to be honest that I can’t since I believe they are all so spot on when yo real think about it.

Thanks for all these great quotes it was an eye-opener, once again, to me. 🙂

    Website saved too!

    1. Hi Sylvia! When I was reading Tony’s quotes and writing this post, it was hard for me to decide where to stop. You’re right. He has so many great and motivating quotes. Thanks for sharing your experience with overcoming a life situation as a result of his advice. That shows the power of what he’s teaching.
