Choosing a business opportunity is a big decision! You have to sacrifice to make a business successful, and I’m hoping this review will help you decide whether WFG is a good business opportunity for you.
Disclaimer: With the growing dissatisfaction in the corporate ladder, more and more people are looking for a way out, and their growing interest in entrepreneurship. This WFG review post will be an honest review I’ve compiled as a Business Consultant whose reviewed several different business models and business opportunities, and whose achieved success in an online and offline business

WFG Review | What is World Financial Group (WFG)?
WFG, otherwise known as World Financial Group is a multi-level marketing company in the financial services industry whose mission is to instruct new investors and middle-class people on financial principles.
World Financial group had a very rocky start. It was founded in 1991 by Hubert Humphrey when he left Primerica. It was originally called Alexander Inc., but was later renamed World Marketing Alliance. The original philosophy of WMA was that baby boomers needed a better solution for tax protection and wealth creation than what Primerica provided in their “buy term insurance and save the difference philosophy”, and Variable Universal Life Insurance was the solution.
Shortly after, Humphrey added the sales and recruiting methodology, and created a headquarters with 500+ employees in Georgia. In 1998, WMA was fined $100,000 for “not properly supervising their sales team” after their clients lost $2 million dollars in invested money. Later, in 2000, they were fined $125,000 for failing to report 900 customer complaints.
In June 2001, certain assets of World Marketing Alliance was bought by Aegon, and became the sales arm of Transamerica. The new ownership publicly announced that they’d put new compliance measures in place; however, of 18 BBB complaints in 2018, majority of them are related to deceptive advertising, so there’s still more work to be done to smooth the reputation and practices of the company.

WFG offers a variety of financial services products such as:
- Life insurance
- Critical Illness Insurance
- Long Term Care
- Mutual Funds
- Segregated Funds (Canada)
- Group Insurance
- Business Solutions
- College/Post-Secondary Education
- Investment Advisory Services
- Financial Needs Analysis
Independent Contractors are able to sign people up with reputable companies such as:
- Pacific Life
- and others
Positive things customers (mostly consultants) are saying is:
- Very good professional development
- Good seminars with information to help build confidence and sales skills
- Many great mentors
Negative reviews customers said include:
- Deceptive advertising
- They don’t give enough information to make a good decision up front
- Was contacted for an interview based on a resume posted on a job board, came in for interview, and was asked to submit $100 and background check to start the “job”
WFG Review | The Compensation Plan
For compensation, there seems to be a heavy emphasis on recruiting and very little to no emphasis on product sales, which is a big RED FLAG when analyzing MLM business opportunities. Multi-level marketing companies are only considered legal if the product is the emphasis of the business rather than recruiting, however, I could not find a compensation plan that spells out how to make a living without recruiting, or details about the percentage of commission earned from the product catalog.

Even with this page, it’s fairly unclear how many contacts need to be made to get one “strong builder” and what that means for your pockets, however over at Finance Guy, he’s done the math. He said:
“To get one SMD in our team, we need 50 licensed associates which means 200 associates and 800 prospects. That’s right the leaders are told to expect to have follow up meetings with 800 people to find one SMD. So finding 3 SMDs means having follow up meetings with 2,400 people.”
It’s clear that quite a few people need to be contacted, and there’s a very small number of people who get licensed and are retained, but retention is a struggle for most businesses (especially MLMs). Low retention is something to be mindful of.
WFG Review | Pros vs. Cons
- They teach families the principles of financial independence: saving, investing, and living within their means
- They sell financial products from reputable sources
- There’s lots of mentorship and coaching opportunities to help grow your business
- An opportunity for people who already were interested in the financial services industry ro get support as they grow their business
- They teach valuable sales, mindset, and prospecting skills
- A+ BBB Rating
- They strongly promote Universal Life Insurance which many finance professionals say is a ripoff for the investor and only a benefit for the seller
- Detailed information about the business is very hard to find
- Lots of high budget competition in the insurance and financial services markets
- No apparent competitive advantages or exclusive products
- The fees and commissions on the products are unclear (based on the information I’ve seen)
- Requires licensure and testing for optimal product commissions, so it’s not for people who don’t want to study
- The marketing is based on a “warm market prospecting system” where you’re contacting people you know and trying to contact people they know
- The startup costs are unclear
- You share your commissions up to six levels, therefore, it’s difficult to make money at startup
- Not much instruction on Internet Marketing and most consultants are using the same marketing strategy
- Majority earned income thru recruiting – Not passive income and not many passive income opportunities
- According to some millionaire sellers in WFG, you must be full-time in order to make full-tme money
- You can become an insurance salesperson with many similar benefits for free (with only the licensing fees)
- Advertised deceptively as a job or without sufficient data to make a clear decision

The video reviews were very mixed: some good and some bad. The success stories are there, but they seem to be anomalies. Here’s a playlist for you to review to help you make your decision:
WFG Review | Conclusion
There were quite a few red flags when reviewing this business opportunity. I’d proceed with caution on this one and e stern about getting answers on questions like:
- What’s the exact product catalog?
- What percentage commission do I get from each product?
- What are the competitive advantages to the consumer for buying from me or other consultants?
- and, What’s the compensation plan look like if I don’t recruit?
Even further, I’d look into passive income components or how you’ll build something that enables you to be able to slow down on the earned income at some point.
A business is only sustainable if it provides a market demand, and it was unclear what solution WFG provides individually to the financial services market outside of the “home business opportunity” and the “distribution of a variety of products” in contrast to many other financial planners who are exclusive to one or two products or brands.
If you are thinking about signing up, I’d consider:
- Whether I’m willing to outwork my competition (others in the financial services industry including my upline and all my peers)
- Whether the competitive advantages are sufficient to make you a full-time income in your area and with your reputation
- and, whether you’re happy with a borderline illegal compensation plan that heavily emphasizes recruiting (unless you find a plan documenting otherwise)
The Verdict: Good Business Opportunity or Not?
Seems Legit, but I WOULD NOT Recommend This Business Opportunity
Overall, I have friends who enjoy WFG, but I wouldn’t recommend World Financial Group as a business opportunity. I didn’t find enough proof to verify it was a scam, but there are quite a few questionable practices. I think the deceptive advertising, the heavy emphasis on recruiting, and little to no exclusive products are red flags that are telltale signs of a scam, so I wouldn’t recommend anyone joining.
Alternatives to WFG
Instead, I’d recommend that if you want to start a business or make more money, you should identify your skills and passions, learn good marketing and sales skills, and build a profitable business where you can share your skills with others.
