Many people get started in the journey towards leveraged income in either real estate or affiliate marketing. Basically, what you do with affiliate marketing is you promote other people’s products or services, and you earn a commission if people buy as a result of your marketing efforts.
One person has a product or service, but would like to sell more. The other person may or may not have a product or service of their own, and they’re both looking to make more money.
The person with the product either hosts the affiliate program themselves, or they go thru an affiliate network to recruit and manage affiliates. When a sale is made, the revenue is either split two ways (between the affiliate and the product/service supplier), or three ways (between the product/service supplier, the affiliate, and the affiliate network).
Since this is my first time talking about affiliate marketing, I want to dive deep and explain it in depth.
How Affiliate Marketing Works
Kyle, the co-founder of Wealthy Affiliate, a world-class training program for affiliate marketing, and my #1 recommendation for entrepreneurs who want to start or scale a business leveraging the internet, says it like this:
This affiliate model is very simple, but most people tend to overcomplicate things. Affiliate marketing allows you (AFFILIATE) to promote product or services online for companies (MERCHANTS).
In most cases, the primary participants in an affiliate marketing transaction are the customer, the affiliate, and the merchant. In other instances, there can be four participants in the transactions: customer, affiliate, affiliate network, and merchant.
When you create an affiliate marketing website, you can either be the merchant or the affiliate: there are pros and cons of both.
If you decide to be the merchant, the steps to begin are much different than becoming an affiliate. Let’s go thru them…
Step 1: Create a Product Idea
First, as a merchant, you have to create a viable product idea. There’s a lot of market research and creativity required to create a product idea that will work in the market. You’ll want to observe your target audience, and evaluate gaps in the market or potential problems that are unsolved. You want to make your product customer-centric: all about solving market demands.
Step 2: Validate the Idea in the Market
After you have an idea and done your market research, you want to create a prototype or minimum viable product to test it out in the market. There are two schools of though in the idea validation arena: one the prototype people and the other are the minimum viable product people.
The Prototype People Say…
You could create a prototype and use focus groups yourself or you could hire research companies who would have people test your product, and give you feedback.
The Minimum Viable Product People Say…
You can try to sell the product before actually creating it to validate whether the market truly wants what you’ll be making.
Ultimately, you’ll have to decide whether you’ll make a prototype and test it, or will you create the minimum viable product and test it in the market: either can work.
Step 3: Set up Your Website
Whether you’re selling on Ebay, Amazon, Etsy, or thru your own self-hosted site, you’ll have to set it up. An e-commerce site or a niche site can be fairly painless, but it has to be done. You want a location where you can direct people who may be interested in your products or services.
Step 4: Attract Visitors and Get sales
Once your website is set up, you’ll have to begin generating traffic to the site. You can generate traffic using SEO, PPC, Social media, direct sales, or so on. More traffic = more potential sales or conversions to your email list.
Step 5: Create the Affiliate Program
After you have some sales under your belt, you have some data to make affiliate partners excited about. Affiliate marketers are happy to hear about your retention rates, the commission percentages, methods you’ve used successfully, and so on, so the more good data you have, the easier it is for you to recruit people.
Step 6: Recruit Affiliates
Affiliates are taking a risk by promoting your products and services. They take their time, their effort, often times, their reputation, and put it on the line by promoting your offers. Not every affiliate is going to buy into your opportunity. In fact, majority probably won’t, and it’s not personal.
You’ll have to take time to recruit affiliates or choose to go with an affiliate network who will market and recruit your affiliate program for you. These intermediary companies who market and recruit affiliates are called “affiliate networks”.
Step 7: Train Affiliates and Follow-up
Often times, affiliate networks or affiliate managers will offer some sort of training to increase the momentum of the affiliates associated with them. Independent affiliates with no camaraderie, support, or ongoing connection don’t tend to sell as well as affiliates who feel they “belong” in a social network of some sort.
Rather than going the merchant route, most startup entrepreneurs, and those who are starting online, begin creating an affiliate marketing website as an affiliate. Starting as the affiliate cuts out quite a few steps. There are multiple ways to re-order these steps and still get a viable result, but here’s the basic process…

Step One: Choose an Interest
Rather than generating a product idea and validating it in the market, you would choose your interest. I’d recommend that you choose an interest that has a high demand and low supply with good monetization options. You can verify this by doing some keyword research and analyzing the sales volumes on popular e-commerce sites like Amazon or Ebay.
Step Two: Build a Website
After you’ve chosen an interest, you want to build a website. This process can be done very quickly–in as little as 5 minutes using Siterubix!
I made this website using this exact process, and it was just as simple as the video shows!
Step Three: Attract Visitors
Attracting visitors is done by:
- Creating high-quality content consistently. Reviews, posts like “The Best…”, or “Best of…” are great for affiliate marketing!
- Market the content thru search engine optimization, social media marketing, paid advertising, direct sales, and link building
- Add optins and landing pages to increase the conversions
- Follow up with email marketing for those who don’t make a buying decision on first site
To be honest, the ongoing activity required to attract visitors and keep recurring visitors is the biggest hurdle for most people who attempt affiliate marketing, however, if you can do this, you can get to STEP FOUR…
Step Four: Generate Revenue!
This is the good part. After the traffic is built up, getting revenue becomes more sustainable an easier to maintain. You’ll still want to provide a valuable service to the site visitors. The dream life….leveraged income where your hard work builds a money making machine can be achieved with hard work (especially up front) and perseverance.
