If you run a business, there will come a time where you’ll need to do a presentation, hand out a flyer, present your company before an audience, or use visual aids to establish a reputation. If you don’t have a family member whose the “creative type”, you might find yourself looking for graphic designers, web designers, narrators, web developers or other technically skilled people.
Unfortunately, industries like graphic design, web design, and the like can seem like uncharted territories, and you can easily be overcharged without knowing why.
Alternatively, if you’re the “naturally creative person” whose unsatisfied with the typical 9-to-5 shift, there’s many traps you can get sucked into. What is Fiverr? An Overview
Fiverr is a digital marketplace that started in 2010. The name “Fiverr” comes from the original gig price of $5 per gig. Similar to the Dollar Tree–where you can purchase everything for $1–Fiverr made it where any digital service could be purchased for $5.
Similar to Yelp, the Yellow Pages, or Angie’s List, Fiverr is a marketplace where digital service providers from all over the world can go and list their services. They consider themselves a marketplace for the “lean” entrepreneur. Some things you can buy or sell on Fiverr includes:
- Graphic design
- Fixing website glitches
- Explainer videos
- Web Development
- and so much more…
There are gigs that are ethical and unethical, and even gigs that serve as funny jokes!
In the world of digital services, nearly anything can be sold on Fiverr.
How Does Fiverr Work?
For a Buyer
If you want to buy a service on Fiverr, you can either use the search bar and look for a service comparable to what you want to buy like this…
Once you enter a few letters of your query, Fiverr will autopopulate options. You can select from the autofill options or continue typing. Alternatively, you can select services by browsing in the categories. Once you see a service you like, you can select it, and view the portfolio of the seller in a carousel type format. Below their offer which will say, “I will do…”, you can see their reviews, how many people they’re servicing right now, and there are left and right arrows where you can look at the seller’s other work. A normal listing looks like this…
As you can see, the seller has her offer which says “I will create 3d model and render images architecture project”. She has 439 reviews and a collective average of 5 stars, and she has 8 orders in her queue. When you look below her offer, you can see real estate images that compile her portfolio, and you can scroll left and right to see more.
This listing and portfolio is just one of thousands of examples of people who sell on Fiverr. The quality of work, skill level, background, and demographic ranges quite a bit. You may work with a freelancer from any country, from various circumstances, and different ethics.
If you like the portfolio of the seller, the price, and the value included in the sellers package, you can checkout entirely thru Fiverr. They offer checkout options via credit card or Paypal.
For a Seller
For a seller, you’d create a seller account and add gigs.
I recommend you perform a competitive analysis. Look at what others are selling, and decide what you can sell that would give you an advantage in the marketplace. Some services (like writing or other entry-level services) are hard to break into because of the amount of competition. Even if you’re very good, you may have a tough time sticking out because there are so many people willing to work for low fees, and so many buyers who want to pay the lowest rates, you may not find your fair pay for your skill level by starting out on Fiverr. However, if you decide you want to start out on Fiverr, you’d simply “Create a new gig”…
You’d enter what service you’ll offer, the category, and you search tags. You go further to add your prices, packages, and timelines. Then, your listing will be reviewed, and published live. Once your listing is live, you can get buyers to buy from you, however, if you’ve listed a gig in a competitive niche, you may need to do more to market yourself.
How Do You Make Money with Fiverr?
To make money with Fiverr, you can: use services to get an ROI in an existing business, white label services, or sell your services on Fiverr. Each has its pros and cons.
One of the most common uses of Fiverr is by people who outsource small tasks: writing, graphic design, logo design, and other things thru Fiverr. By purchasing high value services at a low cost, you can potentially get a high return on your investment. Sometimes, I’ve bought services and gotten very high quality, and other times, I’ve been very disappointed on Fiverr. It’s a risk.
White Labeling Services
Not everyone will be willing to take the risk to buy from a seller that’s they can’t see. Some people will only buy under certain conditions: they may buy from you, but they won’t buy from a site like Fiverr. To them, it’s too risky. In this case, they can pay you for the service, and you’d take the risk by buying from Fiverr. When the service is done, you’d deliver the completed project to the person as if you’d done it.
Some sellers will sell commercial rights to their work, and you can sell their services completely ethically. I’ve white labeled services from Fiverr that went well and I’ve had times where it didn’t go as planned. White labeling services can give you the opportunity to profit, but it can also give you the opportunity for a loss.
I white labeled a logo before. I typically create logos myself, but one of my kids wasn’t feeling well, so I decided to outsource on Fiverr. The service provider had a great portfolio and did a great job, but the client was very picky. She wanted many changes, so I kept having to buy gigs to do revisions for her. If you decide to white label to a seller on Fiverr, be very careful, very specific in your directions, and be clear with your client about revisions.
Selling Your Services on Fiverr
If you decide to sell your services on Fiverr, there’s many to choose from. Starting in 2015, they lifted the requirement that you have to sell your services for $5. Now, you can sell your services for a wide range of prices. The buyers, still are predominately “lean” buyers, so if you want to sell high ticket offers, it may not be the right platform for you.
How Much Can you Make with Fiverr?
While there are probably thousands of people who aren’t making much at all, there are a few anomalies. Some people are making well into 6 figures from Fiverr!
In fact, Forbes disclosed three Fiverr sellers who make 6 figures per month from Fiverr!
Charmaine Pocek, a Human Relations freelancer from Houston, Texas has been notably making $38,000-$40,000 per month writing resumes and helping people to get jobs. She said she started out on Fiverr to make some extra cash to save for an adoption, and it blew up!
Similar to Charmaine, Levi is also making 6 figures per month ($10,000-$15,000) on Fiverr selling his copywriting services.
He says he originally started Fiverr to make extra side hustle cash, but it snowballed. He started in December 2015 making $1200 in his first month, then with continued service, he started getting more and more business. Now, his income is consistently over $10,000 per month, and he’s quit his job. He says the key for him is upselling.
Similar to Levi and Charmaine, Red Horrocks is also making six figures per month on Fiverr. She sells her voiceover services. She started in 2013 because she wanted to pay some debt. It started slow and picked up over time. After one year, she had to choose between her corporate job and doing voiceovers on Fiverr, and she chose the latter. Now, she’s making more than $15,000 per month on Fiverr.
Are these Anomalies?
If you search “How to make money with Fiverr”, you’ll find lots of results, and many of them have lots of views. As a result, you know many people are intrigued with the idea they can make good money on Fiverr, but not everyone is successful with it. The pros say persevere, offer services you’re good at, and upsell.
How Do I Get Started with Fiverr?
As a Seller
To get started as a seller with Fiverr, you set up your account, and set up your gigs. I’d recommend browsing the site to see the skill level, how responsive others are, and how quickly others perform. Make sure you’re gigs have a competitive advantage that matters in the market.
As a Buyer
To get started buying services, you’d head over to Fiverr’s website, and find a service you’d like to buy. You want to be very clear with the directions you give the seller, look at their portfolio, and select someone who appears reputable. Once you have selected a buyer, add the service into your cart, and checkout!
When and How Does Fiverr Pay?
Once you’ve delivered services to a buyer, the buyer has to mark the service complete. You have to be clear in your gig about how many revisions you will perform without additional charges. If you’re not clear, you may have to perform unlimited revisions in order to get payment from the customer. If you’re clear and the buyer is being unreasonable, you can either forfeit the service, or request support from the Fiverr staff. Fiverr helps to mitigate misunderstandings between buyers and sellers.
After the service is marked complete, you can withdraw funds into your Paypal, into your Fiverr Revenue Card, or by Direct Deposit 14 days after gig completion. Fiverr charges the freelancer 20%, therefore, if your gig is $5, then you get $4.
The Good & the Bad
- PRO #1: It’s a legit work from home opportunity
- PRO #2: It can grow into a full time income
- PRO #3: You can offer valuable services to people who need them
- CON #1: Some people sell unethical services like fake likes, false testimonials, spammy links, and fake traffic
- CON #2: Many people go there to get the cheapest price for skilled labor, and it diminishes local economies as a result
- CON#3: There’s lots of competition all over the world who will work for low prices, so skilled laborers in higher cost for living economies may have a tough time
Who is Fiverr For?
Fiverr is perfect for:
- Someone who wants to earn extra money performing services from any location
- A person who is patient and willing to start selling services for a low cost and work their way up
- People in lower cost for living economies where $5 can give them alot of ROI
Fiverr Tools & Training
Fiverr now offers more courses on how to succeed as a seller there. It seems that they’re trying to cater more to sellers than they used to when services were only sold at $5.
While each seller has their own support and policy, the Fiverr staff offers chat, email, and phone support from the staff. Fiverr has strict rules about how sellers can interact with buyers on Fiverr. They don’t allow sharing phone numbers or email addresses. They want all coordination to be done on the Fiverr website.
What Are Common Complaints About Fiverr?
Buyers complain about varying quality of service on Fiverr. As an open marketplace, you may hire one person whose very good and another person who isn’t. You want to be careful that you hire sellers with a good reputation and a commitment to serving you well.
For sellers, they complain about:
- The Fiverr charges of 20%
- The varying customer experiences: some low ball, some are rude, etc.
- They complain about payment or being denied payment
Fiverr is such a huge marketplace, there are many varying experiences buyers and sellers have there.
What Are Common Positive Feedback About Fiverr?
Alternatively, many people (myself included) have found great work at Fiverr, and some freelancers have found great opportunities. I’ve found some great artists on Fiverr who give great service and deliver on time. I have found that I get the best results when I don’t buy from the $5 sellers. Most of the time, the skill level correlates with the price.
What’s The BBB Saying About Fiverr?
Since the BBB is a pay to play system, it’s always difficult to know what they’ll say about a business. Some legit businesses have F ratings and some scams have an A+. However, if you base a businesses credibility on the BBB, then you may not want to do business with Fiverr because they have an F rating.
Fiverr is a marketplace with varying prices for services, however, many of them are $5.
My Final Opinion of Fiverr
Overall, Fiverr is a good opportunity to find services at reasonable costs. There are a wide variety of prices and skill levels there. If you’re looking for an opportunity to earn money online, Fiverr is a legit way to make money, however it has become very competitive.
